Erling Haaland reacts with frustration

Arsenal’s draw with Liverpool did the PFA Player of the Year hopes of Bukayo Saka no favours whatsoever, the forward crashing from third to sixth favourite.

The positions are based on the latest numbers from oddschecker.

 

1) Erling Haaland
It does feel like scoring a quite ludicrous amount of goals in a record-breaking debut season might catch the eye of one’s fellow professionals. He is basically absolutely p***ing this.

 

2) Kevin de Bruyne
Even in one of his less outstanding Manchester City seasons, Kevin de Bruyne demands to be part of the conversation. No player has ever won the PFA Player of the Year award more than twice and the Belgian is unlikely to leave behind a group containing Mo Salah, Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, Alan Shearer and Mark Hughes to achieve that honour.

 

3) Martin Odegaard
The least bottley of the Arsenal bottle jobs has had an outstanding season but the Arsenal vote will absolutely be split.

 

4) Gabriel Jesus
One of the worst finishers in the Premier League so it feels like somebody is taking the mick here. In all seriousness, he has been pretty good for an Arsenal side that have had an excellent season.

 

5) Riyad Mahrez
Arguably not even in Manchester City’s first-choice XI but second top scorer in all competitions for the Citizens. But seriously we are in 100/1 territory already, which shows the dearth of options beyond Haaland.

 

6) Kieran Trippier
Undoubtedly an excellent season but his deserved reward should be a Champions League place rather than a Player of Year award.

 

7) Bukayo Saka
A really poor end to the season from a player who was pretty much untouchable either side of the World Cup. At one stage he was pushing Haaland for this award.

 

8) Jack Grealish
An integral part of this brilliant Manchester City side since Christmas.

 

9) Ilkay Gundogan
Garth Crooks thinks he should be Player of the Year and you should never find yourself agreeing with Garth Crooks.

 

10) Marcus Rashford
A revival this season but nowhere good enough to be in Haaland territory, especially not in the clutch months that mattered.
