Amad, Balogun, Bradley among every Premier League club’s loanees of the season

Ian Watson
Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite, Arsenal's Folarin Balogun, and Man Utd's Amad Diallo have all shone on loan this season.

Man Utd and Wolves have seen their £30million signings thrive away from their parent clubs, while Arsenal and Everton have decisions to make over loanees they sent abroad.

Here’s the player at every Premier League club who made the best of being loaned out this season…

Arsenal: Folarin Balogun
The 21-year-old striker has been a huge hit at Reims, scoring 19 goals in for pro-licence-less Will Still in Ligue 1. Balogun will be lovely and plump when the Gunners take him to market this summer to raise funds for two midfielders, two defenders and a forward.

Aston Villa: Cameron Archer
Two of Villa’s loanees are meeting in the Championship play-offs, with Marvelous Nakamba’s Luton facing Archer’s Boro. At The Riverside, Archer has scored 11 goals and offered six assists in 20 games, which could help Villa bag around £20million if Michael Carrick takes Boro into the Premier League and wants to keep the England Under-21 international. But Unai Emery reportedly wants a good look at Archer first before he considers selling.

Bournemouth: Ben Pearson
The midfielder seems to love working for Alex Neil, who managed Pearson at Preston before reuniting with him mid-season at Stoke. The 28-year-old only has a year remaining on his contract and little prospect of similar status in the Premier League so Pearson could be on the move again this summer.

Brentford: Mads Bidstrup
Cards on the table: we had Tarique Fosu as the Bees entry here after impressing at Rotherham through the second half of the season. But we were wrong, apparently…

Bidstrup has been on loan at Nordsjaelland since January 2022, starting 21 of 22 games this season. No goals or assists from the Denmark Under-21 midfielder but FC Copenhagen apparently like him almost as much as Rob the Beeee.

Brighton: Kacper Kozlowski
Only Forest have loaned out more players than the Seagulls, but Kozlowski is the one they are likely to be watching most keenly. The Golden Boy nominee was last summer sent to Vitesse, where he has missed only two games, scoring twice and offering four assists in a struggling side.

Chelsea: Ian Maatsen
Chelsea really needed Romelu Lukaku to catch fire at Inter so they’d be tempted to buy him but that seems unlikely now unless he wins them the Champions League. The Blues will have been watching Andrey Santos and Malo Gusto closer than many of their other loanees, like Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ethan Ampadu, whose futures seem to be away from Stamford Bridge. But 21-year-old Maatsen’s star looks brighter after being named in the Championship team of the season following 39 appearances appearances for title winners Burnley, who plan to ask to borrow him again next season.

Crystal Palace: Malcolm Ebiowei
Ebiowei joined Palace last summer before heading to Hull on loan for the second half of the season. No goals or assists for the winger in 12 appearances, seven off the bench, but Liam Rosenior reckons the 19-year-old has the raw talent to make it at Palace: “It’s been stop-start to be honest with you. He’s shown moments of his ability. His ability and quality is never in doubt, he’s a fantastic footballer and I think he’s got a chance of making it at a very high level – a very, very high level.”

Everton: Jarrad Branthwaite
Ruud van Nistelrooy would love to keep the centre-back at PSV – the Dutch side had a £15million offer rejected in January – but Branthwaite has also been linked with Man Utd and Liverpool. Everton have a decision: keep, along with Michael Keane and James Tarkowski; or cash in?

Fulham: Steven Sessegnon
None of Fulham’s loanees have pulled up trees away from Craven Cottage but at least Sessegnon has got some minutes under his belt, playing 33 games, primarily on the left of Charlton’s defence.

Leeds: Charlie Cresswell
The 20-year-old played 28 times for Millwall, scoring five goals – which is a decent return for a centre-back – but Cresswell missed the last seven games after fracturing his eye socket. Still, the defender reflects fondly on his time at The Den: “I arrived a 19-year-old teenager and I’m going back up north a man.”

Leicester: George Hirst
The forward struggled at Blackburn in the first half of the season but he fared better with League One promotion winners Ipswich, scoring six and laying on a couple more in 21 appearances, prompting supporters to demand the Tractor Boys ‘sign him up’.

Liverpool: Conor Bradley
The right-back made 50 appearances for Bolton, scoring seven and assisting six from right-back, winning all three of the Trotters’ Player of the Season awards. Bradley will return for pre-season for Jurgen Klopp to take a closer look: “He’s our boy, which I like a lot.”

Manchester City: Taylor Harwood-Bellis
The 21-year-old centre-back played every minute of Burnley’s charge back to the Premier League until a foot injury sidelined him in February. But Harwood-Bellis was back just in time for the Clarets to claim the Championship title and he’d be happy to stick around next season: “It’s something I would be excited for, but obviously it’s not up to me. Burnley are going to have to want me back, I can’t just say I want to go back to Burnley and just turn up next season.”

Manchester United: Amad Diallo
Thirteen goals and three assists for the £30million man have helped Sunderland achieve a play-off place but regardless of how the Black Cats fare, Erik ten Hag is unlikely to be returning the winger to Wearside: “We loan such players to make development and make progress to bring them back, that is the aim of the loan. The aim is to bring them back but as a better player with experience.”

Newcastle: Jeff Hendrick
This was a struggle. Newcastle have loaned out a mixture of squad players who won’t be seen near Eddie Howe’s XI ever again and young players who probably won’t make it either. Garang Kuol was perhaps the most interesting one to watch after he arrived in the winter but his temporary spell at Hearts has seen the Australian start just once. At least Hendrick has played, even if he couldn’t stop Reading from slipping into League One.

Nottingham Forest: Ethan Horvath
Jonathan Panzo has been superb for Coventry, leading to links with Rangers, but Horvath went to Luton last summer and immediately established himself as no.1 goalkeeper. The USA international went to the World Cup and has missed only two Championship games all season, including on the final day when he was rested for the play-offs. “I think it has been a successful season for myself,” he told The Athletic. “By the end of this season, with the play-off games, I’d have played 50-plus games this year. I have been really happy with how I have done and I hope I’ve shown England who I am and what I am capable of.”

Southampton: Nathan Tella
Tella has bagged 19 goals in all competitions for Burnley this season as the Clarets prepare to swap divisions with Southampton. Burnley would like him back but Saints will need Tella’s Championship experience. “I haven’t really thought about it,” said Tella recently when asked about his future. “I know I’m contracted to Southampton, so I’m looking forward to going back there and doing pre-season.”

Destiny Udogie

Tottenham: Destiny Udogie
Tanguy Ndombele has won a Scudetto with Napoli but it’s hard to believe that Tottenham’s record signing has a future in north London. Udogie certainly seems to after an impressive season at Udinese, where he remained on loan after Spurs purchased the 20-year-old last summer. He’ll report for pre-season and very much fancy his chances of staking a claim for the left-back spot next season.

West Ham: Conor Coventry
After signing a new contract with the Hammers, the 23-year-old joined Rotherham for the second half of the season and started every Championship game up until the last two matches. “I love Conor to bits,” said Millers boss Matt Taylor recently. “He’s been excellent for us. His attitude, his endeavour, his intent, his out-of-possession work and the load he’s got through in a short space of time, we’ve been delighted with all of that.”

Wolves: Fabio Silva
Wolves have had a number of successful loans in the Championship, including Ryan Giles at Boro, Luke Cundall with Swansea, and Dion Sanderson at Birmingham. But Fabio Silva was the one Wolves really needed to work given their £30million investment in the striker, and a year away from Molineux seems to have done the 20-year-old the world of good. Silva scored 11 goals and offered four assists for Anderlecht through the first half of the season before going to PSV and bagging five while laying on another. Ruud van Nistelrooy has spoken of his desire to keep the Portugal Under-21 forward, so at the very least, Silva has created a market if Wolves decide to cash in.
