Harry Kane: the ridiculous statistics of a ridiculously wasted season for Spurs

Ian Watson

Harry Kane has scored bloody loads of Premier League goals this season – not that it’s done him or Tottenham much good. Here are the numbers behind an effort that deserves far more attention than it is receiving in the shadow of Erling Haaland…

– Kane has scored 28 Premier League goals this season. He needs two more against Leeds on Sunday to equal his highest tally of 30 goals scored in 2017/18.

– Erling Haaland is the only player in Europe to have scored more league goals than Kane this season. The Tottenham striker is tied on 28 with Kylian Mbappe and Fenerbahce’s Enner Valencia.

– Even if Kane fails to score against a rubbish Leeds side, his total this term would be enough to win the Premier League Golden Boot in 18 of the 27 seasons since the reduction to 20 teams at the start of 1995/96.

– Kane’s 28 goals is higher than his totals in two of the three seasons he won the Golden Boot.

– His goal against Brentford – and what a f***ing goal it was! – saw Kane become the first player to score in 25 different Premier League matches in a 38-game season.

– Despite Kane’s goals, Tottenham are on course for their lowest Premier League finish since 2007/08. They are currently eighth – the lowest they have finished since Kane made his debut is seventh in 2020/21.

– The England record goalscorer has scored his 28 goals from an xG of 20.5.

– Mo Salah has an xG roughly the same as Kane (20.4) but the Liverpool striker has scored only 19 goals.

– Kane has out-performed his non-penalty xG (15.8) by more than any other player in the Premier League.

– Kane has scored 0.76 goals per 90 mins. He has bettered that ratio only twice before: 2016/17 (1.04 per 90) and 2017/18 (0.88 per 90).

– Kane has so far attempted 121 shots. He had more attempts on goal in three of the last seven seasons.

– Of those shots, 51 have been on target, giving him an accuracy rate of 42.1%. Only Haaland (52) has had more shots on target.

– Kane’s goals have come from an average of 16 yards out. Haaland’s, on average, have been scored from 12.6 yards.

– Kane has scored 42.4% of Tottenham’s goals this season – the highest ratio in the Premier League. Erling Haaland, with his 36 goals, accounts for 38.7% of Manchester City’s.

– The breakdown of Kane’s 28 goals: 11 headers; 10 right foot; two left foot; five penalties.

– Twelve of Kane’s goals have been scored in the first half, with 16 coming in the second period.

– The highest percentage of Kane’s 28 goals have been scored in the 15-minute window just after the hour. The breakdown: 1-15 – 4; 16-30: 3; 31-45 – 3; 45+ – 2; 46-60 – 5; 61-75 – 6; 76-90 – 4; 90+ – 1.

– This is the first season in which Kane has scored at least one goal in every time window.

– Eleven of Kane’s goals have been match-winners for Spurs.

– Kane’s goals have won 24 points for Tottenham – 42.1% of their total of 57 points. That’s the highest ratio in the Premier League. The next highest is Ivan Toney, whose goals have earned 30.2% of Brentford’s points.

– Of the dozen players to score 20-plus league goals in Europe this season, only Toney and Reims’ Folarin Balogun are lower that Kane and Spurs in their domestic league. Four of the six highest scorers in Europe have won their league title.

– Tottenham have still conspired to lose seven of the 25 games in which Kane has scored.

– Only Jamie Vardy (nine for Leicester in 2017/18) has scored in more games for the losing side in a single season.

– If Kane is in Tottenham’s XI at Leeds and he starts the second half, he will have played the most minutes he has managed in any Premier League season, beating the 3361 minutes in played in 2015/16.

– Kane is on course to start every Premier League game in a season for the second time in his career.

– Kane has collected more yellow cards (six) this season – his highest total of any Premier League campaign. If you played competently for this Spurs side, you’d want to kick or shout at something too.
