Leicester star named ‘perfect’ Tottenham signing as they ‘need’ a player ‘like him’

Gabby Agbonlahor thinks Tottenham would be the “perfect” destination for James Maddison this summer, as Spurs “need a number ten like him”.

Maddison is one of the better players in the league that aren’t already at a ‘big-six’ club. That he’s scored nine goals and provided five assists in 17 league games this season shows that.

This will likely end up being the best season of his career. That’s after a number of good seasons in the top flight in a Foxes shirt before this campaign.

With his contract at the King Power up at the end of next season, his top form is coming at the right time. Leicester are keen to keep ahold of their star man, but if it becomes clear he doesn’t want to pen a new deal they may have to sell.

If that happens, Tottenham, Newcastle United and Manchester City will be waiting in the wings.

Former Premier League striker Agbonlahor has told Spurs Maddison would be the perfect man to add to their side.

“I think Spurs would be the perfect club for him,” he told Football Insider.

“Tottenham need a number ten like him. They keep playing this 3-4-3 formation, but they can totally change that if they get Maddison.

“It transforms into a 4-3-3 – and that means more attacking football for the fans.”

Indeed, despite having a wealth of attacking talent to choose from, Tottenham don’t really have a player that operates in Maddison’s position.  He could be what they need to piece everything together, and Agbonlahor feels he’d slot into the midfield perfectly.

“[Rodrigo] Bentancur, [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg, and Maddison as a midfield three is a really exciting prospect for Tottenham,” he added.

“Whoever does get Maddison this summer has got themselves a really top player.”

Antonio Conte is fond of playing with a three-at-the-back formation. However, any side would be crazy not to accommodate somebody with the quality of Maddison in their team.

Perhaps the thinking is that the Leicester man can elevate Spurs to the next level. They’re regularly in and around the top four, but he could be the player that adds that something extra and means they’re suddenly challengers at the top of the table.

Indeed, his service to the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son would be phenomenal, and that creates goals for himself would add to the potency of the side.
