Liverpool were trying hard to sign Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde in the final days of the summer transfer window, according to reports.

Widespread reports indicated that the Reds had finished their summer business early on in the transfer window after the signings of Fabio Carvalho, Darwin Nunez and Calvin Ramsay.

However, following a mixed start to the season and a pile up of injuries, Jurgen Klopp and his recruitment team decided to dip back into the market for a midfielder.

Liverpool fans’ un-Scouse faith in FSG. And ‘poshos v plebs’ over postponements…

Liverpool were linked with a number of names after Klopp revealed they were looking to bring in a midfielder before they settled on Arthur Melo, who they signed on loan from Juventus on deadline day.

But Spanish publication AS (via Sport Witness) claim that Liverpool were serious about another midfielder, in the form of Real Madrid’s Valverde.

The Uruguay international has been in brilliant form so far this season for Carlo Ancelotti’s side with the 24-year-old contributing two goals and an assist in five La Liga matches.

And Liverpool were ‘willing to pay €100m to convince’ Los Blancos to part with one of their key players as the Premier League outfit staged a ‘brutal offensive to hire’ Valverde.

Real Madrid had already lost Casemiro to Manchester United in the summer transfer window and they weren’t prepared to sell another midfielder.

The report adds that Real ‘did not even say a word’ to Liverpool about their interest in Valverde as the La Liga giants had no intention to sell.

There has also been a lot of speculation that Liverpool will attempt to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham when the England international potentially becomes available next summer.

Although the Reds were interested this summer, Dortmund were never going to sanction the sale of Erling Haaland – who joined Manchester City -and Bellingham in the same transfer window.

Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo is another player who has been linked to Liverpool but GiveMeSport journalist Dean Jones claims it would be a “surprise” if Liverpool signed Caicedo over Bellingham next summer.

“The thing with Liverpool is they’ve got to aim high in the transfer market and in Bellingham, they see one of the very best young midfielders in world football,” Jones told GiveMeSport.

“They’ve built such a strong case for signing him already. They’ve tracked him since his Birmingham days, it would be a surprise for me to see them sign Caicedo instead of him.”
