According to Liverpool reporter Neil Jones, the Premier League club have three defenders on their shortlist ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

Liverpool are expected to be busy during this summer’s transfer window. This follows their decline this term after challenging for the quadruple in 2021/22.

The Premier League giants will overhaul their squad this summer and they will be helped by Jorg Schmadtke, who is set to become their new director of football.

It is their priority to sign two or three midfielders. Jones – a Liverpool reporter for GOAL – claims Alexis Mac Allister, Mason Mount and Ryan Gravenberch are among their targets in that area of the pitch.

‘Four players are definitely leaving, with Roberto Firmino, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all being given free transfers. Joel Matip and Nat Phillips could be sold, while there is expected to be interest in Caoimhin Kelleher, Kostas Tsimikas and Fabio Carvalho.

‘Signing at least two new midfielders is a priority. Mac Allister of Brighton is a key target, and Liverpool believe they have a chance of landing Chelsea star Mount. Gravenberch would be of interest if Bayern Munich opted to sell, while Teun Koopmeiners (Atalanta), Matheus Nunes (Wolves) and Khephren Thuram (Nice) are among those admired.’

Liverpool are also likely to strengthen in their defence as their current crop of defenders have struggled this season.

Jones thinks Jurrien Timber, Nayef Aguerd and Levi Colwill are being considered by Liverpool.

‘Defensive reinforcement would also be desirable, particularly if Matip and Phillips were to leave. Jurrien Timber of Ajax has been linked, while Nayef Aguerd (West Ham) and Levi Colwill (Chelsea, on loan at Brighton) are well-liked.’

Timber was heavily linked with Man Utd last summer and he is expected to be on the market this summer amid interest from Liverpool.

£30m Aguerd has performed well for West Ham during his debut season, while 20-year-old Colwill has made a positive impact during his loan spell at Brighton.

Earlier this year, Fabrizio Romano indicated that “many top clubs” are following Colwill’s progress.

“I’m sure it is not just Liverpool but many top clubs around the world and not just in England are following Levi Colwill, he’s an excellent talent. We will always have this kind of news on him because it’s normal to follow Colwill.

“But again, at this stage, Chelsea consider him as key part of the squad next season and have no intention to let him go.”
