Mourinho: The only attacker I didn’t play was Dwight Yorke

Jose Mourinho believes that people are “confused” about his management style, and that Dwight Yorke was the only attacking player who didn’t feature against West Brom.

United beat Bournemouth 2-0 on Wednesday to recover some goodwill after their 1-0 defeat to West Brom at the weekend handed the title to Manchester City.

Mourinho had demanded a response from his players after Sunday’s embarrassing loss to the bottom club at Old Trafford, and Chris Smalling and Romelu Lukaku responded with goals.

The manager defended his approach to the West Brom match, insisting that he fielded every attacking player at his disposal.

Indeed, the only one who didn’t feature was former United striker Yorke, who watched from the stands.

“I understand people can be a bit confused with my message because sometimes it’s not what they think it is. But, the last match the only attacking player I didn’t play was Dwight Yorke who was in the stands,” he told BT Sport.

“I nearly called him over to bring him on.

“I know how to win titles, in case some of the young guys don’t know. I won eight in four different countries.

“I think we are inconsistent, and we are inconsistent many times in our attitude. You pay the price.

“We lost points against teams who are probably going to be relegated, or are in this group of the relegation fight. We lost three points against West Brom. We lost two points against all the other teams involved in that fight, Stoke, Southampton.

“This season of course was a much better season in the Premier League for us than the last one.

“But we need to be more consistent in our approach. We should have 10 more points than we have. No doubts.”
