Neville claims ‘pathetic’ Man Utd ‘turbulence’ will impact title hopes; Carra picks out three contenders

Jamie Carragher thinks Liverpool and Manchester United are best placed to challenge Man City for the Premier League title next season.

Arsenal have been at the top of the Premier League for much of this season but they have crumbled during the run-in.

Mikel Arteta’s side have won just two of their last eight games in the league. Man City meanwhile have won 12 league games in a row to clinch the title with a couple of games to go.

Pep Guardiola’s team have now won the Premier League for three straight years and they will be the favourites to lift the trophy again next season.

City’s rivals are all likely to be in a stronger position next season. Man Utd have improved under Erik ten Hag and they are expected to improve their spine this summer with a new striker, centre-midfielder and centre-back to be targeted by the head coach.

Liverpool meanwhile have been back to their usual selves during the run-in and they will overhaul their midfield this summer, with Brighton’s Alexis Mac Allister among their main targets.

Carragher has explained why he thinks Liverpool and Man Utd are most likely to challenge Man City next season.

“I’m going to go for Liverpool and Manchester United,” Carragher said on MNF.

“I think Liverpool will come back. I agree with Gary, I think the jump in terms of really challenging City might be too big and it might be too big for Manchester United too but I do see those two teams challenging.

“United look really solid and if they go and get a couple of attacking players to score more goals – that’s what they need to do. Liverpool will invest again in midfield and they’ve got players that have won the biggest trophies before in the goalkeeper, Salah, Van Dijk, Trent. So I think Liverpool and United.”

Gary Neville is less sure about Man Utd’s chances, though. He reckons their ownership situation could hamper their title hopes.

“The reason I’ve not said United right now is that there’s going to be a lot of turbulence in Manchester in the next four to six weeks, in that the Glazers are finally going to make a decision at some point if they get their act together,” Neville said.

“It’s been pathetic what they’re doing. At some point, the new owners are going to come in and they’re going to have to get their feet under the table. To then think they’re going to challenge in their first season…it could happen but I think there will be too much turbulence with the recruitment.”
