Rodgers ‘extremely keen’ on Tottenham job; report claims he’ll ‘persuade’ Leicester duo to join him

Tottenham to get Rodgers

According to reports, ex-Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers is ‘extremely keen’ to join Tottenham but Daniel Levy is against the appointment.

Spurs have been without a permanent manager since Antonio Conte left the club back in March. Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason have both had spells as their interim boss since the Italian’s exit.

The Londoners are set for a major rebuild this summer following what’s been a disappointing season in 2022/23.

The club’s hierarchy will be desperate to keep Harry Kane and they will have to get their manager appointment right after several missteps over the past couple of seasons.

Rodgers has been out of work since departing Leicester at the start of April. Under him, the Foxes finished fifth in back-to-back seasons between 2019 and 2021 and they also lifted the FA Cup during this stretch.

But Leicester have plummeted down the Premier League this term and they are likely to be relegated to the Championship.

Rodgers is still highly thought of and journalist Ben Jacobs thinks he is ‘the right kind of fit’ for Tottenham.

‘I would also still keep an eye on Brendan Rodgers, who might not be a popular choice given where he left Leicester, but he’s another manager who is the right kind of fit. Rodgers is extremely keen on the role but it’s up to Spurs now,’ Jacobs wrote for Caught Offside.

‘His time at Liverpool means he’s well used to challenging for the Champions League, and he was only just denied top four finishes in back-to-back seasons on the final day with Leicester, actually losing crucial games to Spurs on the penultimate (2019/20) and final (2020/21) weekend of each campaign.

‘The most obvious or certainly popular choice would have been Mauricio Pochettino, who has now agreed terms with Chelsea. Levy holds an excellent professional and personal relationship with Pochettino, but in the end he was never approached. Paratici wasn’t in favour and Levy in the end agreed.

‘Any candidate will now want to understand what they are walking into next season and that’s what makes the recruitment search tricky right now.’

A separate report from Football Transfers claims ‘there is a boardroom tussle at Tottenham between chairman Levy and executive director Donna-Maria Cullen over the potential appointment of Rodgers’.

‘Cullen is pushing for the appointment of Rodgers’ in the hope that he ‘can persuade his ex-Leicester City stars James Maddison and Youri Tielemans to move to Spurs with him’.

Levy is ‘against the appointment’ but it is pointed out that ‘the prospect of Tielemans and Maddison arriving with Rodgers could help sway opinion’.
