Man Utd target Ruben Neves holds off a Leeds player

Portugal international Ruben Neves is set to leave Wolves for Man Utd in the summer transfer window, according to reports.

The Red Devils nailed a lot of their recruitment in the summer transfer window with midfielders Casemiro and Christian Eriksen making a huge difference to their performances.

Bayern Munich midfielder Marcel Sabitzer joined on a season-long loan deal in January too with Eriksen picking up an injury that will keep him out until May.

And with rumours that Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek and Fred could potentially moved on in the summer, it’s likely that Man Utd will look to sign another midfielder in the next transfer window.

They have been linked with Neves for a long time with the Portugual international admired by the Old Trafford recruitment department.

And now Spanish publication Sport (via Sport Witness) claims Man Utd are getting serious about Neves ahead of the summer transfer window with the Wolves midfielder told he ‘can go’.

Neves has multiple admirers but La Liga giants Barcelona have decided to ‘close the folder’ on their pursuit of the former Porto youngster.

The 27-year-old only has until the summer of 2024 left on his contract and a recent report claimed that Wolves have now dropped their asking price from £75m to £50m.

And with Barcelona pulling out of any potential transfer over their decision to prioritise other targets, Sport insists Neves is ‘already negotiating what could be his transfer to Manchester United’ ahead of the summer transfer window,

Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville are both convinced that Neves, who has also been linked with Arsenal and Liverpool, will go on to play at a Champions League club.

“You impress at Wolves and maybe there’s another move on after,” Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“I thought Ruben Neves would be at Wolves for a couple of seasons and then move on to a Champions League club and I’m surprised he hasn’t made that move, for whatever reasons.

“Whether it’s ’cause clubs look at him and think he’s not quite the right profile. But you look at him what he was doing at Porto, captaining that team at such a young age I thought it was a natural progression.

“It’s not quite happened yet but he is a player you look at and think can he make that next step and I’m convinced he can.”

Addressing Carragher’s opinion, Man Utd legend Neville added: “It’s interesting that you should say about Neves, he’s been at Wolves quite a long time.

“I genuinely believe that Ruben Neves could go and sit in any midfield in Europe in any team in any league and be comfortable.”
